In order to get the most out of your outplacement firm, you should aim to work with a firm that is willing to be a strong strategic partner in the future.
What’s that mean?
Well, many outplacement firms are willing to work with companies by charging them a retainer fee, allowing the company to call upon their services when needed.
This is an antiquated approach.
Outplacement is one of those services that you need from time to time but not every day. So, by paying a retainer fee, you hemorrhage money that could be spent elsewhere. Because of this, you should look for firms that do not charge retainer fees for their services. After all, what’s the point of spending money for no reason?
Also, your firm should be flexible enough to work with all of your staff members regardless of location, meaning that the firm should use all of the technologies available to them to help your employee get placed. If a firm cannot figure out how to offer virtual outplacement, they probably can’t figure out the digital job market, either.

Make sure your firm doesn’t use term limits.
What’s the point of paying a retainer fee while also having a term limit on a service that could end up with your staff members never finding that next role?
