As human resources professionals, it can be easy to get bogged down with the day-to-day grind that the position entails. These tedious tasks – mixed with the random chaos that can pop up throughout the day – can make us forget some of the bigger picture issues that HR can impact.

We all know that HR is more than what pop culture deems it to be. But it can seriously give you a boost to hear some of the amazing ideas that HR thought leaders are putting out into the world.

This is why we’ve decided to put together a thought-provoking list of videos for you to dive into. All of which are primed to get you firing on all cylinders.

Enough talk – let’s dive right in.

Five: How Rethinking HR Can End the Cycle of Poverty

 –

Joe Deloss, founder of Hot Chicken Takeover in Ohio, is applying social entrepreneurship to help end the cycle of poverty that is plaguing the US.

“Currently, Joe is launching Hot Chicken Takeover – a new restaurant concept earning significant acclaim in central Ohio while providing supportive employment to dozens of adults affected by homelessness, incarceration, and poverty,” reports TEDx.

“This business models is founded on success Joe had previously while launching Freshbox Catering for Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio.”

DeLoss showcases how HR can truly be disruptive, having a huge impact on communities no matter what their business may be. Learn more about Hot Chicken Takeover’s mission here.

Four: The Uncomfortable Truth About HR and Leadership Development

Note: this video is heavy. The title has uncomfortable in it for a reason.

In this short TEDx Talk, Patrick Vermeren, an HR adviser and trainer who started his career in 1996 within the Belgian banking industry before moving on to work with Proctor & Gamble in the US, explains the hidden negatives inside common HR models and questionnaires.

“Alarmed by the nonsensical ideas of Transactional Analysis, Patrick Vermeren set out on a mission to reveal the truth about the many HR theories, models and questionnaires,” TEDx writes.

“The academic literature revealed that most HR practices (in recruitment, assessment, development, coaching…) are very problematic and some even dangerous.”

The talk goes over the adverse impact that can come with many of HR’s favorite models – those used to find new hires, increase productivity, etc. Vermeren says that many of these ‘myth-following’ trends and crazes are nothing more than ‘nonsensical quackery.’

It’s a heavy, but deep, look into how HR and management thinking systems are flawed.

Three: The Ever-Changing Role of Human Resources

 –

LinkedIn Talent Solutions created a really well-rounded video explaining how HR has changed – as a role – over the last couple of years.

Back in the day, HR’s role was all about policy, literal people management, hiring, and things of that nature. However, with the advent of the internet, LinkedIn Talent Solutions argues that HR is now much more.

“In the beginning, the role of your HR team was largely functional. It was centered around payroll, leave, policy making and training. Recruitment generally meant putting an ad in the paper and hoping for the best, or hiring a recruiter. Then things changed,” they write.

“Today, the role of HR in an organisation is no longer functional, it is transformational. As your partners at LinkedIn, we are here to provide you with just the tools and insights you need to get the job done.”

It’s interesting because this video was created in 2016, which isn’t all that long ago. It’s amazing how much further we’ve even come since then and it’s interesting to think about where we will go in the future.

Two: ‘Stop Trying to Motivate Your Employees’

Can you motivate your employees? According to Kerry Goyette, the founder of the Aperio Consulting Group, no, you can’t.

Goyette argues that your staff is already motivated. And that the systems that we use to ‘increase motivation’ largely do not work.

“It’s a misconception that you can motivate your employees. They’re already motivated. The key is to unleash their motivation,” TEDx reports.

“The Founder of Aperio Consulting Group, Kerry Goyette takes a deeper dive into motivation, how to leverage it, and the counterproductive motivations that may be holding us back from success.”

Unleashing motivation, according to Goyette, is all about team engineering and other practices. It’s an interesting take on an area of HR that has a lot of noise that can muddle the best processes. In short, motivation isn’t all that complicated. So why do keep overthinking things?

One: HR Tips With Liane Hornsey, Google’s Ex-VP of Operations

 –

What’s better than hearing HR tips from one of the most successful leaders in the space? Liane Hornsey, who was previously at Google and Uber, shares what it takes make HR thrive.

The video is mainly about her time at Google (this video was filmed in 2012). Google is always an interesting case study, especially for HR.

“My problem is I hire brilliant people. So 95-99 percent of my people are high talent. They really, really are. The people here are good. So we don’t use traditional methods,” Hornsey said, according to MeetTheBoss.

Hornsey has recently been embroiled in issues stemming from Uber, though. You can read about all that in this great Wired piece here.
